Chavurah Community Seder on April 13th

Our community seder for 2012 will take place at Kol Ami on the 7th night of Passover – Friday, April 13th.  Although we in the CBY like to think of ourselves as inventive, the Shvi’ee shel Pesach is celebrated in many Jewish communities. In addition to the passing over that gives the holiday its name, we will explore the meaning of a crossing over (or passing through) event – the splitting of the Red Sea (or Sea of Reeds).  This momentous march is supposed to have occurred on the seventh day of the journey out of slavery and is the climax of the Exodus from Egypt.  It is a story of bravery, faith, and celebration.

As befits a 7th night seder, we will begin PROMPTLY at 7 pm.  Therefore, I suggest that you plan to arrive between 6:30 and 6:45 pm to allow for the appropriate amount of pre-seder schmoozing.

The price is $18 for adult members of the Chavurah B’Yachad and $9 for their children ages 6-18. The price for non-members is $30 for adults and $15 for their children ages 6-18.   Children under the age of 6 are free.  Please RSVP no later than Friday, March 30th.  (See the attached form.)  I hope you can make it.

CBY February 24th service: A Celebration of Your Tallit

The parshah for February 24/25, Terumah, includes God’s instructions to Moses about how to build the Mishkan/Dwelling Place—the portable sanctuary that will follow the people through the desert.

In that spirit, we ask that each of you bring your tallit—your own portable sanctuary—and share its story.    If you prefer, bring another Jewish object that has accompanied your family’s journeys: a kiddush cup, spice jar, book…

We’ll share the stories of these family treasures and link those stories back to the stories in the parshah.

Joanne Slotnik and Steve Trimble will lead the service.  Marv and Jeanne Goldstein will conduct the children’s service.  Karen Nielsen-Anson will provide crucial help with our music.  Tzedakah goes to CBY.

We look forward to seeing you at Kol Ami for our 6:00 p.m. vegetarian potluck dinner in the religious school wing and our service in the Pepper Chapel at 7:30 p.m.

Shalom, Salaam, Tikkun-Olam, & Peace

A Christmas Project of Hope and Cheer

December 24 and/or December 25

West High School – Cafeteria
241 North 300 West, Salt Lake City, Utah

For 19 years under National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) leadership, members and friends of Utah’s Jewish and Muslim communities have served others less fortunate in our community during the Christmas holidays. Joining us this year will be West High School English Second Language Department, National Honor Society, Student Ambassadors, and faculty. Our project, Shalom, Salaam, Tikkun Olam, is done in the spirit of Tikkun Olam (helping to repair the world), Tzedekah (justice) and Peace (shalom in Hebrew or salaam in Arabic). For all our efforts, National NCJW gave this project a “Vision for America showcase award,” 2011.

Last year, we (you!) helped 1500 people. This, our 20th year, we expect to help more lonely and frail seniors, those at-risk, and–with more schools signing up for help–new refugees. We will serve 600 homebound senior citizens, families (150 individuals) among the working poor or in transition, a battered women’s shelter (+75 individuals), 25+ single women head of households, and 105 refugee families representing 500+ children/adults from countries as diverse as Bosnia, Congo, Iraq, Liberia, Sudan, Myanmar, Somalia and Bhutan.

Checks may be donated to NCJW Utah Section with notation for Tikkum Olam Project, and sent to Kitty Kaplan, treasurer, 3170 E. Alta Hills Drive, Sandy, UT 84093. Secure online donations may be made at (www.ncjwutah.org). NCJW is a 501 C3, tax-exempt organization.  If you have questions, or want to volunteer, please e-mail or call one of the following:

Socks for Sukkot!

Socks for Sukkot!

Kathi & Sam Cohen will again host the annual CBY Sukkot celebration at their home at 1541 Logan Avenue (1541 East 1620 South) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 14th.  We will be in the backyard, so come up the driveway. All are encouraged to arrive at 5:30 and help decorate the sukkah.  Bring branches, vines, flowers, homemade decorations–be creative!  We will be outdoors, so dress warmly.  Vegetarian pot-luck.  Please bring a dish to share and any necessary serving  utensils.

Rachel Fishbein knows what tzedakah means.  She has generously donated her stock of hand-knitted wool-blend socks and hats as a Sukkot fundraiser for CBY.  What better way to stay warm on a cool night (or in the Pepper Chapel on the High Holidays when the heat has yet to come on!).  These colorful foot-warmers will be for sale at Sukkot, on the 14th at the CBY celebration.

Special note: This week (through Thursday eve) you can purchase socks and hats at Joanne Slotnik & Steve Trimble’s Avenues home (call first: 801-364-3031).

Adult socks: $20

Kid’s socks: $10

Hats: $15

CBY celebrates its 25th anniversary in June 2011

The next generation--with our Torah.

CBY TWENTY-FIFTH Anniversary

L’dor V’dor – From Generation to Generation

IN EARLY JUNE, we gathered with Rabbi Michael Ross to celebrate 25 years of CBY with a shabbaton weekend of reflection, conversation, and community.

  • On Friday, we explored the Jewish legacy we inherited from our ancestors and family members.
  • On Saturday, we explored how we understand our role in that legacy.
  • On Sunday, we explored how we transmit this legacy to the next generation–and then we celebrated with good food and stories.
